FEAR OF FAILURE AND PROCRASTINATION: How to stop Procrastinating
Do you have an extreme fear of failure? Does your fear of failure often lead you to procrastinate? Does your procrastination lead you to perform substandardly, reinforcing your fear of failure? Have you been struggling with this for a lifetime? Are you often insecure over your supervisor’s review of you? Is your fear of failure and procrastination getting worse as the years go by? Do you want to find a way to help yourself? Have attempts at time management failed?
The fear of failure is a feeling, not a fact. For the unfortunate individuals who suffer from fear of failure, they often cannot distinguish this feeling from a fact. They are often high achieving, highly educated individuals who are driven by anxiety and fear.
Their fear of failure comes from their inability to separate what they do from who they are. They often have childhood experiences of being repeatedly told that if they failed at school, they are a failure as a human being. While this may or may not have been their parents intention, this gets deeply integrated into the person’s core.
Therefore, every time they have to go up to produce a product, to present, to submit a proposal; the fear of failure cripples them. Because what they are afraid of is that their project isn’t going to be evaluated, they are going to be evaluated. They will be told they are a failure, they are a loser, and this pervasive fear of finding that out, leads to procrastination.
Procrastination isn’t a time management problem, it’s an anxiety issue. The person is terrified to find out this may be the day I learn I’m fired, I’m rejected, I’m horrible. Who would want to go through that? Therefore, people procrastinate and procrastination creates a vicious cycle of a crisis where when time is running up, the person rapidly produces work. Often, below of what they could, have they been able, to manage their fear and anxiety.
